Notes & Reflections
Human Rights Officer
As the Human Rights Officer for Durham Law Society, I am dedicated to fostering a deep understanding and appreciation for human rights among our members. Human rights are at the core of justice and equality, and I am passionate about highlighting their significance within the legal field.

In the past, the Human Rights Division of Durham Law Society has hosted distinguished events with renowned barristers and solicitors, each dedicated to human rights advocacy. By learning directly from practitioners, students gain a nuanced understanding of the challenges and rewards of this field, as well as the skills and resilience required to succeed in human rights advocacy. These events are not only informative but also foster a network of like-minded individuals and mentors who can guide aspiring human rights lawyers as they embark on their careers.

HUMAN RIGHTS MOOT

Last year, we launched the first edition of the Human Rights Moot, an event that proved to be both popular and impactful. The moot was significant because it offered students a practical, hands-on experience in advocating for human rights within a simulated courtroom setting. This experience allowed participants to develop critical skills, such as persuasive advocacy, legal research, and the ability to argue complex human rights issues. Given the success and importance of this event, I am committed to organising a second edition of the Human Rights Moot, providing students with another opportunity to engage deeply with human rights law in a realistic and challenging context.
HUMAN RIGHTS AND PUBLIC LAW CENTRE

A key aspect of my role has also been developing meaningful partnerships with Durham’s Human Rights and Public Law Centre. By collaborating with the Centre, I have been able to leverage the expertise of Durham’s esteemed faculty, bringing their insights and knowledge directly to our members. This partnership is aimed to enrich our events by incorporating academic perspectives on human rights issues, alongside the practical insights provided by legal practitioners.

By organising events, facilitating partnerships, and curating opportunities for engagement, I hope to inspire and empower Durham Law Society members to pursue careers that are not only fulfilling but also rooted in the fundamental principles of justice, equality, and human dignity.
